What do you need to know about the Juniors? Here is a list of the questions most frequently asked by prospective and new members: What are the advantages to purchasing a family membership, as opposed to individual Junior memberships for my children? A
family membership offers activities
for all members of the family. It allows your whole family year-round
access to the club, for Junior activities for the children, to the
woman’s charity group through the OYC Doll-Fins organization, to
family sailboat racing at our many Oceanside Harbor races in large
boats. This membership is economical, and gives your family a great
opportunity to unite in a pastime that all can share and enjoy! You
don’t need to own a boat or know how to sail to join! Do
I have to know how to sail to join the Junior Program? Not
by any means. OYC offers summer sailing programs that teach the beginner
how to sail, and the Junior Program hosts sailing clinics throughout the
year, so there is no need to be an expert when you join. Take advantage
of the atmosphere of the program and learn as you go! Are
there kids my age that are involved? The
Junior Program has kids ranging from as young as 7 or 8, to as old as 20
or 21, who are active and participate in most of our activities. There
is sure to be someone your age, and if not, see if one of your friends
wants to join and learn with you! Are
there additional costs from the $14.00 per month for independent Junior
members? The
flat fee for Junior members is $14.00 per month, and is only required
if the parent(s) is not a member of the club. Juniors who wish to
sail in
races at other harbors will need to pay the entry fees (usually $10-15)
for those races, to those yacht clubs. Additionally, some of the OYC
Junior races carry small entry fees, (usually $10.) If financial
hardship is an issue here, scholarship is available. But all of the
parties, coaching, seminars, and activities at OYC are free to Junior
members. Can
Juniors use any club boats any time? We
want our Juniors to be out sailing all the time, and to that end, all
the club sailboats are available for any Junior who is certified on the
boat. While this sounds fancy, certification only means that they have
received a basic introduction to the boat, including a tour of the boat
and the shed where the gear is kept, and have logged at least two
supervised hours sailing the boat. This is prudence on OYC’s part, in
order to ensure that the boats are only checked out to qualified
skippers. The sailboats can be checked out Tuesday-Sunday, from 10-5,
with extended hours in the summer. What
can this program offer me? Few
things are as rewarding as mastering the challenging sport of sailing.
Different wind conditions, currents, and sailing partners make each time
on the water a one in which to learn something new. This sport demands a
diligence in practice, a commitment to sportsmanship and the Corinthian
yachting spirit, and a desire to work as a team of kids learning from
each other. Few programs offer this level of competition alongside the
nurturing of qualified coaches and dedicated instructors. Join us today
to see why youth sailing is the best-kept secret in youth sports! How
long will it take my son/daughter to learn how to sail? This
depends on the commitment your child wants to make to sailing. A very
dedicated Junior could become quite proficient in a matter of months, if
he wanted to practice several times a week for a few hours each time,
with coaching. A weekend sailor would require a much longer tenure as a
student before gaining complete proficiency. But, the issue should not
be how long it takes, but rather how exciting it is, and that the
learning is qualitative and guided by the kind of teacher who is
attentive to each sailor’s needs. Our weekday coaching program is a
great way to learn and get in some practice between the weekends. |
