Big Boat Sailing

Sailing is a sport that, when learned at a young age, can become a life-long love. Many of our club members who sail big boats can attest to that. There is something very freeing and exhilarating about being out on a boat with just yourself, the wind, the waves, and the gleaming sunshine on your back. Our Juniors cannot get enough time on the water; they always want to be out sailing. We encourage our intermediate and advanced sailors to come down on weekday afternoons and weekends, log a float plan (a plan of where they intend to sail) with the office, and go sailing for a few hours to practice what they have learned in coaching sessions.  Practice makes for better sailors!

OYC is committed to providing top-notch sailing instruction to our Juniors. Though our coaching season reaches its pinnacle in the spring and summer, we also provide it during the fall and winter months. Check out our schedule below, (subject to change), to see when you could fit our coaching into your schedule. As our program grows and our needs become stronger, the coaching will become more frequent.

Small Boat Racing at OYC

Every year, OYC’s Junior Program hosts a myriad of small boat fleet races (click here for the Junior events calendar). These races typically include classes for Senior and Junior Sabots, Lasers, Lidos, and Portsmouth (or a variety of boats under 21’ feet). While these OYC events are strictly for fun, earning trophies sure puts smiles on the faces of our skippers. Join us for our summer Twilight racing series on Wednesday nights, our Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter series’ during those seasons, and our fun races like the Indian Summer and Turkey Days regattas. Join the fun!

Small Boat Racing at Other Harbors

Sailing at other harbors is a challenge that every Junior looks forward to during their sailing career. A new harbor means different sailors to compete against, different wind shifts and currents, different obstacles (like moored boats) in the course, and a whole new atmosphere. IT is an experience that is both exhilarating and challenging. Regattas staged in other harbors are the true test of a Junior’s sailing ability as the level of competition is raised and the chance to win in one’s class often means an upgrade to a more challenging boat in the future.

During this year, many of our Juniors will travel to other harbors, both for High School sailing events, and for Junior races. It is an excellent opportunity to strengthen one’s skills and use what the coaching practices teach! Consider it for your racing future!

Big Boat Sailing

Many of our Juniors have sailed in such prestigious races as the Newport to Ensenada, San Diego Area G Championships, Yachting Cup, Long Beach Race Week, and Gollison- Gollison Regattas. They cultivate their experience on big boats by going out during OYC race days. Sarah, the 1999 Junior Commodore now regularly skippers two big boats in Oceanside, Dana Point and San Diego. Paige, the 2002 Junior Commodore does mast and helps with bow work on several big boats and is in demand as crew both in Oceanside and many harbors up and down the coast. These Juniors are great examples of how far a little big boat experience can take a zealous Junior.
