How Sailing Lessons Work

Oceanside Yacht Club instructors will provide basic sailing instruction on either a 23’ or 27’ keelboat. Both vessels are well equipped to provide a platform for students to learn the basics of sailing and safe seamanship. Students will become competent in: raising, trimming and removing a main and jib sail on the training boat, piloting a keel boat through the various points of sail, trimming the sail for maximum efficiency for various wind speeds and wind angles, maneuvering the boat through a preset course and returning to the dock. Emphasis is having fun while learning the principles of sailing.

Upon completion of the weekend session, participants will receive an “American Sailing Association” certificate allowing them to rent a keel boat at most sailboat rental locations.
